When MMORPG Holiday Events Fall Flat

By on Oct 21, 2013 at 11:05 am, in Article, RIFT  |  Comments: 13 comments

It’s pretty disappointing when an MMORPG adds a holiday event that does little to make things not-so-static. I’m not talking about games that don’t make events revolve around real-world calender events, either. Developers can choose to go down that path if they prefer. But if an MMORPG has an October-themed holiday event, I want to see that October-themed event. I want the immersion. I want the cool decorations. I want to feel like things are really different, and that players have a reason to celebrate. I want more than, well, what RIFT gave us this year. –

yeah the clothes and dimension stuff is fun but where is the headless horseman battle event…I miss those in WoW. and the trick or treating. the decorations all that stuff.
Here is the Valentine’s Day event boss from WoW when it was new…I got that one on ‘tape’

I loved the trick or treating in WoW. I dunno why, really. I redid it all last year when I randomly decided to try out Pandaria (only stuck around for a few months). I liked the instanced boss fights for every holiday too. Stupidly simple fights, sure, but a daily chance to get something pretty cool (like the dildo rocket from the Valentine’s event) makes them worthwhile, and really– that’s all it takes. A change from the norm.

It’s fairly frustrating when an MMORPG contributes a vacation occasion that does little to create factors not-so-static. I’m not referring to activities that do not create activities center around real-world calender activities, either. Designers can select to go down that direction if they select. But if an MMORPG has an October-themed vacation occasion, I want to see that October-themed occasion. I want the engagement. I want the awesome designs. I want to experience like factors are really different, and that gamers have a purpose to enjoy. I want more than, well, what RIFT provided us this season. –
