Top Five Shows You Should Binge Watch This Summer

By on Jul 18, 2014 at 2:00 pm, in Geek Culture, TV  |  Comments: 1 comment

There are good things about summer: sunshine, pools, no school (if you’re a student or a teacher), and longer days. There are also bad things: insect swarms, herds of children everywhere and—worst of all—pretty much no new TV.

That’s why summer is the optimal time to binge watch shows, whether online or on DVD. After suffering through a particularly dreary summer in the Midwest (seriously, it’s either raining or it’s 70 degrees), here’s my list of the top five TV shows you should binge watch.

1) Game of Thrones

Seriously. If you haven’t seen this yet (and don’t mind a little graphic violence, sex, and nudity), now is the best time to binge watch this series. We’re four seasons in, but with only 10 episodes each, the prospects of watching it aren’t that daunting. Also, pretty much everything has been shaken up after last season, so season 5 would be a great time to come in and start watching. So get caught up, and watch Game of Thrones. Now you’ll know what everyone’s talking about.

Seasons: 4
Episodes: 40
Episode Length: 1 hour
Channel: HBO

2) Battlestar Galactica

While there is definitely some validity to complaints that the Battlestar Galactica remake declined in quality as the series went on, it’s still a gripping and exciting series. It’s also a staple of geekdom—so, if you haven’t seen it yet, you should. It’s a long watch (like Eureka, below), but it’s definitely worth the time invested. It’s not like you have anything better to do, is it?

Seasons: 4
Episodes: 75
Episode Length: 1 hour
Channel: SyFy

3) Eureka

eureka3

The town of Eureka was conceptualized as an idyllic community designed for scientific exploration. What you have now is shenanigans. The show is a great balance of funny and clever, and always entertaining. All of the characters are interesting and entertaining, and (for the most part) it rarely lets you down.

Seasons: 5
Episodes: 77
Episode Length: 1 hour
Channel: SyFy

4) Sherlock

There’s something delightful about watching a character be horrible yet brilliant—which is undoubtedly what has made shows like House and Sherlock so popular. While Sherlock rarely has the suspense extend beyond an episode, it’s still worth binging because “little” events or characters from previous episodes will frequently become important later on.

Seasons: 3
Episodes: 9
Episode Length: 90 minutes
Channel: BBC (PBS in US)

5) Young Justice

youngjustice5

With only two seasons—and quite the story gap between the two—you may argue that Young Justice doesn’t belong on this list. But hear me out. The show is completely addictive, and you’ll find yourself watching into the early hours of the morning. I finished the entire 46-episode show in less than two days. The great thing about this binge-worthy series, though, is that the universe continues on in comics and games, meaning there’s still a lot to discover after the last credits roll.

Seasons: 2
Episodes: 46
Episode Length: 30 minutes
Channel: Cartoon Network

Man I’ve been wanting to re-binge watching BSG lately… it’s so, so binge worthy. But I have all these other shows to catch up on too, dangit! Why must summer be such a binge TV season?!
