anniversary posts

Happy birthday, Guild Wars 2! Okay, I may be a day late. There’s cake somewhere. Maybe teeny tiny Queen Jennah is stockpiling cake. At any rate, yesterday was officially the one-year anniversary for Guild Wars 2, and Mike O’Brien had a lot to say regarding how far the game’s come in the past year in the latest ArenaNet developer blog. It’s obvious that the team is immensely proud of what they’ve done with the game during this past year. The two-week updates are creating quite the stir in the industry, and Guild Wars 2‘s success is evident in a handy graphic-by-the-numbers posted on the blog itself.

Massively also posted an interesting interview with Lead Content Designer Mike Zadorojny yesterday. During the interview, Zadorojny talked about the struggles the team has had in the past year and the lessons they’ve learned. The lessons are all for the better, of course, and the team looks forward to pushing themselves even further to see what the next year has in store for fans.

“We still have just as many people working on Guild Wars 2 now as when we launched the game. Four of the teams are now working on the Living World aspect, but everyone else is working on new features, new pipelines, new tools, and new ways we can roll things out. So we are very involved with the game and love it, so much so that when a new release goes out, we’ll take some time off to play the game and see what’s going on and listen in on the feedback. The two-week cadence allows us a couple of major bonuses in terms of whether we make a mistake or something not necessarily as cool because there is a shorter time players have to deal with that mistake compared to a six-month patch. It’s a challenge, but an exciting one.”

In a recent interview with IGN, Colin Johanson talked a bit about the upcoming Guild Wars 2 anniversary on August 28th and how ArenaNet plans on celebrating it with players. The update planned for the anniversary is going to showcase some pretty fun things from the sounds of it:

“We’re going to do a release on the 20th that is intended to be our big anniversary release celebration,” he explained. “That release is intended not only to provide a lot of awesome content for people to experience, but to also set the tone for what they should expect for the living world and the types of things we want to do with events in the year to come.

It takes the story of the last year and brings it all together. It makes it clear where everything has been going and really closes a lot of open questions that players have had. It’s a story that really affects the entire world and permanently creates content and change for the entire world game-wide, which is really something that’s important to us and we want to showcase that that’s where stuff is headed.”

Johanson also told IGN that Guild Wars 2 players will be receiving a special gift as part of the big celebration. Presents are always welcome. Make sure to check out IGN’s full article for more information.

2.2 carnival title

Ascended, get your balloon-popping shoes and PA building plans ready– RIFT 2.2 and this year’s Carnival of the Ascended World Event are right around the corner! Trion announced today that the patch will land next week on February 27th. RIFT’s second anniversary is coming up and that means that all of the fun mini-games, things to see, and rewards will be returning from last year– along with some new games and goodies taking place in Storm Legion zones this year.

There will be two new games and pie-throwing seems to be involved in one of them. Anything involving pies has to be good, right? As part of RIFT’s second anniversary, Ascendants will be able to pick up a special anniversary cloak. There will also be a new Carnival-specific alternate Codex Warfront to enjoy that involves a bit of luck in the Wheel of Fate and a collection of corresponding achievements that are currently being previewed on the Public Test Server.

RIFT 2.2 will also finally be bringing us our third tier of Planar Attunement that will include these nodes as well as new weapon enchant nodes that were recently added. We’ll also be getting the second tier for the PvP Planar Attunement tree. We’ll be getting a new Steppes of Infinity zone event, too.

Trion announced that RIFT will be holding another Return to Telara free event from March 21 to March 25. During the anniversary week of RIFT (March 21 through April 4), subscribers will receive special bonuses for XP, PA XP, Guild XP, planarite, zone event rewards, favor, and more. Check out the official announcement for all the details.

On December 20th, Star Wars: The Old Republic will be celebrating its first anniversary. As part of the celebration, BioWare will be sending all players with valid accounts 25 bundles of complimentary faction-based fireworks. These fireworks will be mailed out on December 11th, which gives players plenty of time to celebrate in style and light up the skies. As part of SWTOR’s anniversary, BioWare is also planning to show off some of the best moments from the celebrations by showcasing community screenshots on the official website and over Facebook.

More information regarding the community showcases will be provided in the coming days. For the full news article, make sure to check out BioWare’s announcement of the anniversary.

It is probably not a surprise that Trion is probably planning something special for their one year anniversary. And according to an interview with Gamesradar, Hal Hanlin said, “We’re planning to drive a wedge between the factions for the game’s one-year anniversary.”

What could that mean? This is the first time we’re hearing about the next big update. What kind of game mechanics could they be adding to the game that will really put Guardians against Defiants even more?
