On October 25, 2014, I’ll be participating in the huge social gaming event called Extra Life where I’ll play video games for 24 hours to raise a ton of money to help save kids’ lives. These kids are facing things like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and a plethora of other injuries and diseases. Local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals around the country treat thousands of children each year, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. All proceeds from this game-athon of epic proportions will go to them. It’s really an amazing event run by an amazing group of people, this will be the 2nd time I will personally be participating.

My personal goal is $500, but I would love to shatter that number. Any and all contributions can really make a difference. If you’re looking for a worthy place to donate money to that truly matters, this is it.

Your donation is tax-deductible and ALL PROCEEDS go to help kids.

As an added bonus, Junkies Nation will be giving a FREE T-Shirt to the first 5 people to donate $50 or more. We have sizes S-XXL. In the event that we run out of a certain size, we’ll figure something out. All you need to do is email teljair-at-rerollz.com to confirm your donation. Unfortunately, I can only ship within the U.S.

Click here to participate yourself and join the JunkiesNation team or contribute to others on the team!

For our fans who enjoy games created by Trion Worlds, we’d also like to plug their fantastic Extra Life team. Our own Kiwi Dream is participating on their team this year, so if you’re interested in hanging out with the Trion team, make sure to stop by. And enjoy Kiwi’s awesome Extra Life boat in ArcheAge. Because it’s awesome:

We’re happy to announce that Junkies Nation is currently looking to add new writers to our awesome, tight-knit writing team. We’re looking for writers passionate, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about console games, PC games, MMORPGs, MOBAs, and all things geeky. In particular, we’d love to have writers covering these specific areas:

  • MOBAs
  • MMORPG news
  • MMORPG guides/editorials/previews (bonus points if you know one game inside and out really well)
  • Console/PC game news
  • Console/PC game guides/editorials/previews
  • Comics

In addition, we’re always happy to have anyone on board who loves to write an in-depth editorial or two. There are plenty of gaming sites out there that cover the fluffy. We’re not here for fluffy. We’re here to dig deep, share our experiences, and say what needs to be said. Even if your specialty isn’t on the above list, feel free to contact us. We’d be more than happy to accommodate you.

You’d be free to write whenever you want as your schedule allows. Ideally we’re looking for writers who can contribute 2-3 times a week since we’d like to keep our team fairly small, but we’re here to work with you– not the other way around. Article ideas would be totally within your own control regarding specific games/topics, but we’d be here to lend a hand with full editorial support and idea support.

As far as payment is concerned, we will begin by offering an unpaid trial period that will extend into larger opportunities. More information will be disclosed privately.

To apply, tell us a bit about yourself, your areas of interest, and your experience writing. If you have any published writing samples online, share ‘em! Send any applications, questions, or concerns to Laura Hardgrave at laurah@rerollz.com.

Hey, folks! We’re back!

You might remember us. We’re Draegon, Teljair, and Laura/Serrain. We’re the administrative team behind Rift Junkies, FORCE Junkies, and the myriad of other fansites that have popped up over the past few years with the Junkies banner proudly displayed. Last year we decided to start an ambitious project– a multi-dimensional geeky/gamer-focused site that not only covered the latest and greatest MMORPGs, but also other MMORPGs we all loved.

And the MOBAs we loved. And our favorite console and PC games. And our favorite geeky TV shows, movies, comics, and cosplay masterpieces. We’re gaming junkies, sure, but there’s so much more to love in this wide, weird, wild world. Junkies Nation became a place for everyone to embrace their inner gamer and geek and just celebrate whatever it is they happened to be passionate about.

We had a few stumbles in this endeavor last year, unfortunately, but we’re back bigger– and better– than ever. Our team consists of a familiar group of faces as well as a few new, awesome writers who are here to share what they’re passionate about and maybe teach a fan a thing or two about their latest cosplay adventure, MMORPG project, or MOBA strat.

Our aim is to not be a mere news site, but a place where honest opinions, solid strategies, and passionate reviews and previews are the core of what we cover. We won’t rehash stuff. We won’t hound you for clicks. We’re simply here to share what we love and hope folks are interested enough to stick around to see what we have to ramble about.

If you’ve been a part of our awesome Rift Junkies community for a while now, you may have noticed that Rift Junkies now redirects to Junkies Nation. This move was made not to bid farewell to RIFT and our past coverage of the game, but as a way to build a bridge between our fansite community and the broader gaming/geek-centric community that may still love RIFT, but also loves other things and other games.

Make no mistake– we’ll still be covering RIFT. All of our Rift Junkies content (as well as everything from our other Junkies fansites) is now on Junkies Nation. Older content can be found searching under the specific game categories. We’ll also be covering a lot more than RIFT. Remember what we said about a wide, weird, wild world? Yeah. Life’s too short to not embrace all of its geeky bits.

To the Rift Junkies community– thank you for being there for us over the years.

We’re in for a wild ride. We hope you’ll join us.

Laura “Serrain” Hardgrave
Jason “Draegon” Dodge
Ryan “Teljair” Raplee

glowing ruby ki run title

Remember the Glowing Ruby Ki Rin? How about the Shadow Hellbug or the Glowing Emerald Ki Rin? If you happened to be online when these limited time only items were available in the RIFT Store, you may have picked them up or knew someone who did. If you happened to not be online for those PST-based four hours, you were out of luck (unless you bought them from someone). Trion kind of went bananas for a couple weeks with the limited time only sales. Those sales seem to have quieted down for the moment, but despite Trion’s best intentions of allowing players to access unique, special goodies, there was one little thing the team forgot about– time zones.

While the RIFT Store is still one of the better F2P in-game cash shops around, there are some definite issues with RIFT’s cash store and with limited time sales such as these. Interested in digging a little deeper and reading some thoughts on these limited time sales and other issues regarding the the RIFT Store? Head on over to Junkies Nation and take a peek at our newest opinion column: The Cash Shop Critic. This entry’s all about the limited time RIFT sales.

autumn-harvest-round-2-items-headerRJ

Get your Halloween pails ready, RIFTers. Autumn Harvest is beginning today, and you know what that means– artifacts galore, costumes galore, and plenty of booze, drunken Fae, and spooky dimensions to visit. Earlier this week, we previewed a whole bunch of the new items, costumes, consumables, dimension items, and achievements being added in this year’s Autumn Harvest. Yesterday, all of that hit live shards a day early along with even more new goodies. Three new costumes became available on the RIFT Store along with two new random grab bag/supply crates that have a chance of containing one very cool mount and a new set of Halloween-themed masks and weapons. The masks also have an accompanying achievement.

Care for a preview? Check out Round 2 of our Autumn Harvest preview on Junkies Nation.

Also be sure to stay tuned for our updated Autumn Harvest guide as this year’s event unravels later in the day. If you didn’t take part in last year’s Autumn Harvest, you can take a look at our guide from last year to get an idea of how parts of the event may work.

ffxiv-review-leveling

There have been a lot of published reviews revolving around the leveling process and the launch period surrounding Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. This is all good and expected given the primary audience of video game reviews in general. It’s sometimes a little interesting, however, to take a look at reviews that are written and published after the launch rush of an MMORPG dies down and the community really begins to sink its teeth into endgame.

One of our writers on our sister site, Junkies Nation, took the time to write a critical review that takes a detailed look at the leveling process, endgame grind, replayability factor, community, aesthetics, and the depth of the overall game as far as its world and systems are concerned. The ‘niche factor’ of FFXIV: ARR is also examined closely, which seems an appropriate term for a game that has as wide of an audience as this one does:

“The community of a game is always going to depend on a bazillion factors as well as fluctuate rapidly throughout a game’s existence. For the moment, the community of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn can be split up into two categorizes– niche, and, well, niche. There are folks who are helpful, friendly, and welcoming to new friends and new adventuring buddies, and there are also folks out there who are only focused on advancing their characters as rapidly as possible and may come off as pretty rude about that fact. It’s probably safe to say that all MMORPGs house both types of folks these days, but with the case of this game, I’d say that before assessing the community in its totality, it’s vital to first find your own niche.”

Read the full review over on Junkies Nation.

Note: Keep in mind that this was published right before the latest hotfix, so the endgame currency information is not completely accurate.

blood and madness

Get your candy buckets ready, Guild Wars 2 fans. October’s here, and you know what that means– it’s time to slay those odd-looking candy corn critters, climb the creepy clock tower, and marvel at the cute, little charr kittens running around in costume. It’s time for this year’s Guild Wars 2 Halloween holiday event– Blood and Madness!

ArenaNet released a summary of the changes we’ll be seeing in this year’s event along with a new teaser video that the team published just yesterday. We’ll be getting all the fun activities from last year, of course, but we’ll also be seeing a whole bunch of new stuff including new rewards, new achievements, new encounters inside the labyrinth, and a new opponent to fight– the Bloody Prince Edrick.

For more details, check out our writeup on Junkies Nation, our brand new sister site that’s dedicated to MMORPGs, console games, TV shows, comics, and all sorts of geeky things.

defiance dark matter arkfall DJ

In case you haven’t checked out Defiance lately, the game has not only recently launched a new DLC pack– the Castithan Charge Pack DLC– but it has also launched a brand new type of arkfall. These arkfalls are Dark Matter arkfalls, and contain some of the most dangerous dark matter enemies and technological creations found in the game.

There are four different types of dynamic arkfalls that can pop up anywhere. The most dangerous Dark Matter event is the “Extraction Force” multi-phase major event that takes place at the culmination of a major Dark Matter arkfall event. In this fight, you’ll face off against a Monolith.

For more information, check out our exclusive screenshots previewing on Junkies Nation, our brand new sister site that’s dedicated to gamers and geeks alike. You can also find more information on Trion’s developer blog and feature spotlight.
