With RIFT‘s next major patch update– RIFT 2.5– coming Wednesday, November 6th, there’s a lot of new content on the horizon including underwater content just off the shores of Ember Isle complete with new quests, carnage quests, daily quests, rifts, rewards, and a zone event. We’ll also be seeing a level 60 version of the Drowned Halls sliver and an updated, overhauled level 60 version of Deepstrike Mines with new encounters. Four additional level 60 chronicles will also become accessible. One of which is a new Planebreaker Bastion chronicle while the other three are “Intrepid” versions of level 50 chronicles that have been updated for level 60 players. Players who are currently maxed out on Planar Attunement will also be able to explore the three new PA trees– Storm, Cinder, and Nature.

While the developers have announced that not all of the new 2.5 content will be launching when the update goes live and will instead be released as the weeks unfold, most of the new content is currently previewing on the Player Test Shard for players to explore. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights, shall we?

Notes: As always, all information taken from the PTS is subject to change at any time. RIFT Store prices are listed with the Patron discount in effect.

New Underwater Content and Story

rift 2.5 song of dreams preview underwater rift

Keeper Ivan near the porticulum in Tempest Bay begins the questline to start your underwater adventures off the coast of Ember Isle. We won’t go through the entire questline in order to avoid storyline spoilers, but the story is pretty interesting although the questline itself is fairly short. You’ll get The Keepers notoriety for completing the quests.

There are some neat rewards for running through the quests as well, including extra PA XP in the form of Planar Infusions and two cute pets. For finishing the questline, you’ll get your choice of 300 rep with any of the level 60 factions as well as an epic BoA planar focus with 2 greater slots, 4 lesser slots, and +20 Water resist (just like the one from the old Waves of Madness event). Upon completing the story questline you’ll also unlock the daily quests. They reward the same +300 notoriety writ for a faction of your choice.

Weam and Dreaver are the two pets, shown below with the tooltip for the planar focus:

rift 2.5 song of dreams preview quest rewards

There’s a set of new achievements for the underwater content in the Ember Isle section including one achievement to finish the questline, another to complete the “The Rising Depths” zone event, another to close 20 underwater rifts, one to complete all of the underwater carnage quests, and another to complete all of the rare carnage underwater quests. These “rare” mobs are named monsters that can be found throughout the area. They’re elite, but can be soloed without too much difficulty.

Finally, there’s one achievement to kill the “Sinister Presences” in the area and another to complete all of the new underwater achievements. This final achievement grants three dimension lamp items. Pictured from left to right in the image to the right, these items are the Kelari Lamp with Yellow Light, Kelari Wall Sconce, and Kelari Hanging Light.

Besides the new underwater rifts and zone event off the coast of Ember Isle, there is also a new water rift that will take place randomly in all classic and Storm Legion zones. It’s called “Sinister Tide” and comes with a new achievement, title, and may drop something pretty nifty from the sounds of it.

PA Trees: Attunement of Nature, Storm, & Cinder

If you’re currently maxed out on your Planar Attunement (PA), you’re in luck! 2.5 will be adding in three completely new PA trees: Attunement of Nature, Storm, and Cinder. These are three completely new trees that are only accessible after filling out the previous required tiers.

Note: We looked specifically at the Warrior PA trees, so some of the stats will vary between classes.

New Dimension and Dimension Items

rift 2.5 song of dreams preview infinity gate dimension

The Infinity Gate dimension will be released with RIFT 2.5. It’s one of the few epic-quality keys in the game. It costs 900 plat or 1530 Credits.

There are 13 new music boxes to choose from that play music from each of the zones/areas. The new ones from world zones include: Shimmersand, Stillmoor, Stonefield, Droughtlands, Ember Isle Volcano, Gloamwood, Moonshade Highlands, Scarlet Gorge, and Scarwood Reach. Each of these costs roughly 28 plat or 26 Credits apiece. The new ones from instanced raids include: Hammerknell Fortress, Hammerknell Depths, Infernal Dawn, and River of Souls. These are slightly more expensive and go for around 25 plat or 45 Credits apiece.

There’s also a new Dimensional Distance Indicator item under the “Interactive” area of the dimension RIFT Store section that can be used to show range at 5-meter intervals out to 30 meters. This costs 25 plat and 10 gold or 45 Credits.

rift 2.5 song of dreams preview dimension trophies

In the RIFT Store, there is a new Trophies section for Dimensioneers. So far, these trophies have to do with collecting new artifact sets that are part of select level 60 Expert dungeons. The West Ember Isle dimension items are also in this section. This will allow dimension creators to pick up extra items after they have grabbed the original reward items.

For a video showcasing all the dimension goodies in 2.5 check out Kiwi’s awesome coverage.

Oh, and looking ahead a bit (Warning: Possible Spoilers!)– TehFrank on the official forums also did a bit of datamining and came up with a possible list of dimensions we may see in the future as there definitely seem to be some files in the game that suggest just that. Here’s a list of the file names for us to ponder over:

pd_anywhere, pd_azcuazg_oasis, pd_bahralts_ascent, pd_daazez_wastes , pd_edgestone_ridge, pd_faering_woods, pd_fetid_plains, pd_harrow_crypt, pd_infinity_gate, pd_karthan_ponds, pd_malluma_track, pd_pus_swamp, pd_scarlet_gorge_cliff, pd_stillmoor_vale, pd_stone_grove, pd_the_black_garden, pd_tower_meadow

Chronicles and the Return to Deepstrike Mines

rift 2.5 song of dreams preview chronicles

The Return to Deepstrike Mines is the new revamped and completely reworked level 60 Expert dungeon that won the poll from a few months back. There’s a whole new set of achievements for completing the new version, and from the looks of the achievements, this version will be quite a bit different from the original. Here are the achievements:

2.5 song of dreams preview deepstrike mines achieves

There are three new “Intrepid” chronicles to complete at level 60. These are basically rehashes of the original level 50 chronicles, only scaled to level 60. Intrepid: Hammerknell, Intrepid: River of Souls, and Intrepid: Greenscale’s Blight will be available. There are new achievements for completing them at level 60, but they’re exactly the same as the level 50 ones as far as the bosses and requirements.

There’s also, of course, the level 60 revamped sliver called Intrepid: Drowned Halls. This one’s a rehash as well, but there are new achievements for doing everything over again at 60. The gear that drops is Tier 1 raid quality and is intended to help newer guilds and players catch up and take on Tier 2 raids.

The level 60 chronicle that’s entirely new is Planebreaker Bastion: Aftermath. There are a ton of achievements for this one, including a bunch for completing Hard Modes of the encounters as well. There are two dailies for completing the chronicle.

Other New Goodies

rift 2.5 song of dreams preview dreams of war

Trion’s adding a ton of new achievements in this update in case you haven’t noticed! There are some new achievements to be had in all of the previously-added level 60 Expert dungeons as well as the existing chronicles for taking out a “Sinister Presence” in each of them. This includes Realm of Twisted Dreams and Queen’s Gambit. The reward for completing the meta achievement for dealing with these sinister presences is the aptly-named title “The Sinister”. The Infernal Dawn: Laethys chronicle also has new Hard Mode achievements.

Daglar will also be making an appearance in RIFT, of sorts, in the form of a, well, duck. Yes, a version of this duck kinda:

rift 2.5 song of dreams preview ducklar

“Ducklar” is obtainable by collecting an artifact set in Ceremony of Attunement. Why Ceremony of Attunement? Just because, well, I don’t know. I guess because it’s been a while since we’ve done that one? That sounds as good of a reason as any.

In other news, there’s a nifty wishlist feature being added to the RIFT Store. You can use it to select items you’re hoping for, and you can view the wishlists of anyone on your friends list or do a player search and look up the lists of other players. As mentioned during a recent Trion live stream, Patrons will be getting an increase to their daily quest cap in 2.5 as well. The cap for Patrons will become 40 instead of 30. There is also a bunch of new raid marks for players to utilize.

RIFT 2.5: Song of Dreams is looking to be quite the update!

PA T3 title

There were a few interesting dev tracker posts yesterday on the official forums. First up, Daglar made two updates regarding near-future changes we’ll be seeing to Planar Attunement (PA) consumables as well as PA experience. The Crystallized Insight consumables that add chunks of PA XP will be changed to automatically be added to a player’s PA XP total in next week’s (not this week’s) hotfix. This little bit was also slipped in later within the same thread:

We are going to be updating PA exp to be gained from characters sub 50 when we make this change as well.

You still can’t spend it unless you are on a character 50 or above, but you will gain it.

This is good news for players who haven’t capped their PA points yet and are altaholics (totally guilty here!) at heart.

Last but not least, it seems there’s a bug with the repeated PvP daily quest for The Dendrome. The bug only happens after the daily is initially completed and received a subsequent time. The affected quests are “Aquatic Equinox Pods” (Defiant) and “Salve of the Hailol Satyrs” (Guardian). The fix for this bug will also be implemented during next week’s hotfix.

2.2 carnival title

Ascended, get your balloon-popping shoes and PA building plans ready– RIFT 2.2 and this year’s Carnival of the Ascended World Event are right around the corner! Trion announced today that the patch will land next week on February 27th. RIFT’s second anniversary is coming up and that means that all of the fun mini-games, things to see, and rewards will be returning from last year– along with some new games and goodies taking place in Storm Legion zones this year.

There will be two new games and pie-throwing seems to be involved in one of them. Anything involving pies has to be good, right? As part of RIFT’s second anniversary, Ascendants will be able to pick up a special anniversary cloak. There will also be a new Carnival-specific alternate Codex Warfront to enjoy that involves a bit of luck in the Wheel of Fate and a collection of corresponding achievements that are currently being previewed on the Public Test Server.

RIFT 2.2 will also finally be bringing us our third tier of Planar Attunement that will include these nodes as well as new weapon enchant nodes that were recently added. We’ll also be getting the second tier for the PvP Planar Attunement tree. We’ll be getting a new Steppes of Infinity zone event, too.

Trion announced that RIFT will be holding another Return to Telara free event from March 21 to March 25. During the anniversary week of RIFT (March 21 through April 4), subscribers will receive special bonuses for XP, PA XP, Guild XP, planarite, zone event rewards, favor, and more. Check out the official announcement for all the details.

RJ Dev Tracker

Kervik had some good news yesterday for players who are eagerly awaiting the third tier for Planar Attunement yet have noticed the severe lack of level 60 weapon enchant/buff nodes to utilize. The second tier’s weapon buffs leave a bit to be desired at level 60, and it’s good to see Trion has made this update. Without further ado, keep reading to see the team’s proposed additions.

2nd tier pvp pa

A few days ago, Daglar mentioned that the Trion team was unsure about adding a second tier to the PvP Planar Attunement tree (also called Attunement of War) anytime soon. He did state, however, that one of the developers was really pushing for the addition. It seems that developer has come through for PvP players after all, since we now have a second tier previewing on the Public Test Server (PTS).

No announcement has been made at the time of writing this article as to when this tier may reach live servers or if the PA nodes are in their final stage. Keep reading to see a preview of the various nodes.

Note: As always, information on the PTS is subject to change at any time.

Despite Planar Attunement’s third tier popping back on the Public Test Server in early December, Trion didn’t include it in the in-progress PTS Patch Notes for Patch 2.2. This left some players confused as to whether or not it will be included in RIFT 2.2 or pushed back to another date. Daglar took some time on the official forums yesterday to confirm the fact that Trion does plan on releasing the third PA tier in 2.2. He also discussed the possibility of a future second tier for the PvP PA tree, Attunement of War:

Don’t assume anything about Tier 2 for PvP PA – it was never actually something that we had planned – nor did we communicate that it would ever be coming.

That said, one of our developers here really wants to add something for it so we’ll see.

Keep reading for Daglar’s explanation as to why the PA addition doesn’t show up on the in-progress notes.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the third tier of Planar Attunement (PA) on the PTS. Okay– a very long while. But it’s back now, and Trion seems actually ready to release it on live servers this time! The third tier is largely similar to the version previewed back in March, but there have been a few changes.

For your convenience, here’s a list of all of the current nodes in each of the sections. For weapon type nodes and stat nodes, I’ve just listed the type, since those will vary between callings. For nodes with multiple ranks and nodes, those numbers will show in parenthesis. If there’s no specific number of nodes, there is just that one node.

Note: As with all information on the Public Test Server (PTS), this is subject to change at any time.

During PAX Prime 2012, one of the major Storm Legion details announced was that we’ll be seeing major changes to the Planar Attunement system, including a move to an account-bound PA system. Hartsman, the announcer of this change, didn’t go into too many details, which left players to speculate as to what exactly Trion’s intentions are with this setup. Daglar issued a response on the official RIFT forums yesterday that helped clarify a few things for us:

Shared pool means that we intend to combine all PA’s earned on all of your characters, up to the maximum PA value available.

If you have 50 on character A, 100 on character B, and 250 on character C that is a total of 400 PA to spend per character.

The exp required to gain a level – the bar itself – is intended to be shared across all of your level 50+ characters. The intent is that if you are playing character A and log off at 50% of a level costing 500,000, and you log onto character B, you see the exp bar at 50% through the same level costing 500,000.

It seems Trion is going the most direct route here, which is to allow players to share all of their PA experience between characters, and also allow them to spend that total on each character separately. This presumably would also include new alts as they reach the level cap. The good news? This will make switching mains halfway through a raiding tier fairly simple. The bad news? Some players are feeling that this “shared pool” system actually simplifies things a little too much.

This weekend at PAX Prime 2012, Trion Worlds put on quite a show with all of the goodies they had to offer. The company showcased RIFT a great deal, naturally, diving into areas of Storm Legion that we haven’t seen before. We were also shown some of the new Bard skills in action. On top of all that, we also found out some new details about the expansion! It was a good weekend, and thanks to Trion’s TwitchTV page, it’s possible to view the footage at any time.

There’s a lot of footage to cover, however, thanks to three days of live streams. That’s why we’re here to offer up some of the best highlights of the three-day event, show off some screenshots, videos, and all the juicy details that were new information reveals. As a warning, all of the footage below was originally captured from Trion’s live streams, so graphical/sound quality may not be the best. Let’s take a look, shall we?
