infinity gate live stream header

In yesterday’s special Trion live stream, dahanese and OverloadUT showed off Infinity Gate, which is one of the brand new 20-man T2 raids coming to RIFT 2.4. They were joined by the guild Legit as well as Cyzo and Halvon from the dungeon development team who answered a few questions and even talked briefly about the strategies needed for beating the encounters.

Infinity Gate only has three encounters. It’s meant to be a fairly quick raid and is the easier of the two raids being added. The entire raid takes place in the central little area in front of the actual Infinity Gate. Trash will pop out and needs to be killed, then bosses will pop out and need to be killed. The first two encounters, Breaker X-1 and the Brothers of Life and Death, are tuned for groups who have killed a couple bosses in Grim Awakening (who meet the hit/toughness requirements of T2 raids, essentially). The third boss, Volan, is quite a bit more difficult.

Over the weekend, an interesting phenomenon happened across our shards. Thanks to the new tier 3 Planar Attunement ability rift group summons added in RIFT 2.2, players are now able to temporarily teleport to new shards in order to take part in Great Hunts, raid rifts, zone events, world PvP, and more. All that’s required is a group invite from someone on the new shard and someone in that group to use their group summon PA ability.

As more players realized this, we began to see call outs in level 60 chat for events happening on different shards. Volan was one popular attraction, of course, which did cause some lag issues during peak hours. Cross-shard Volan participants can fight him, it turns out, but not enter Biofoundry afterwards. Still, it’s a nice chunk of extra Infinity Stones.

Whether you’ve seen him yourself yet or not, if you followed the news leading up to Storm Legion’s launch you know about the Volan encounter. The giant robot appeared liberally on live streams and in trailers, and the combination of the giant scale of the fight and exciting new player mechanics (jumping!) made Volan one of the stars of Storm Legion. But now that the expansion is out and many people are level 60, has the Volan encounter lived up to its billing?

During the final Storm Legion beta weekend, Volan, the massive, tech-influenced colossus that was first previewed months ago during E3 came out to show players just how dangerous he is. If you didn’t get a chance to take part in the fight yourself, one of our new Rift Junkies video gurus, SilentStorm, captured an impromptu video of Volan causing quite a bit of death and destruction all around. The fight definitely took those who stumbled upon it by surprise!

Keep reading to watch to the video.

During E3 last week, a staff member over at got to preview a demo of Storm Legion. From the sounds of it, most of the material previewed was the same demo we were shown live last Thursday, but a few new names popped up within the article, and like the good, uh, source of frequent speculation I am, I thought I’d share my findings!

“It was an exciting demo with Trion VP of Development, Russ Brown showing me various areas. Crucia is gathering her Storm Legion and building a power plane system in the cradle of the lost civilization and the environment and architecture have a techy look with whirring gears and sparks of lightning, gear motifs, relics of long non-functioning clockwork systems run by magic are found in the landscape. I got a glimpse of the Golem Foundry as well, a level 54 play area. A few names were tossed out as we bounced around in game. A giant beating “heart” in the Imperium Core which was an eerie mix of plant and animal elements, an area named Ashora, teasers of fighting the last two dragons in the world, Regulos and Crucia, but we finally came to the heart of the demo, the golem boss.”

The golem boss is none other than our buddy, who we saw stomping around, smashing things, and being, well, ping-ponged by QA testers catapulting through the air. The architecture sounds absolutely amazing.

What’d we find out here? A couple of things: Golem Factory is a level 54 area, so we’ll be seeing it as we level, that cool-looking plant thing is actually Imperium Core, and hey, another name– Ashora, complete with… teasers of fighting dragons? Not sure what that all means, but it’s definitely interesting. It’s also interesting to read different opinions and impressions on the content that has been unveiled so far. One thing’s for certain– Trion has showed off some impressive stuff!

Trion’s live coverage at E3 is a few hours away, but yesterday, one of Gamebreaker TV’s reviewers got a sneak peek at some of the goodies Storm Legion has in store for us. They released a video last night. Take a look at the link below:

Gary Gannon Discusses The Rift: Storm Legion Demonstration At E3

This sneak peek will presumably be what we’ll be seeing for ourselves in a bit. Here are some highlights of Gamebreaker TV’s interview:

  • New Storm Legion continents are both larger than our current continent, essentially tripling the world.
  • Speampunk-inspired dungeon design.
  • A colossi was the main focus of the presentation (the guy in the title image, who is also being called Volan). Volan destroys the actual environment as he rampages around– bridges, walls, etc.
  • Volan takes a unique strategy to defeat: multiple armor parts on him must be destroyed in a special order. Once certain parts are destroyed, new quest hubs and even dungeons may spawn (this sounds awesomely dynamic).
  • Talk of a city spanning multiple zones (Tempest Bay?). The zones contain different areas of ruins, etc.

Gary called RIFT’s presentation the “coolest MMO presentation seen at E3 so far”. It definitely sounds awesome! We can’t wait to see it for ourselves, on RIFT’s livestream over on their Facebook page. The livestream will take place on Thursday June 7th at 12 PM PST. Check out all the details here!
